Holy Week (Semana Santa) in Antequera has been declared of National Tourist Interest and has a ritual all its own: "Correr la Vega", when the floats are carried at a run up the steep streets of the old town, seen above all on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. In 2027 Holy Week runs from 21 to 28 March.
Three Holy Weeks less than an hour away
- Antequera (22 minutes): centuries-old brotherhoods, floats carried on shoulders and the final uphill run.
- El Paso de Riogordo (about 40 minutes): the Passion performed by hundreds of local people on a large open-air stage on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. It has been staged since 1951 and tickets are paid.
- Málaga (45 minutes): a Holy Week of International Tourist Interest, with the arrival of the Spanish Legion on Maundy Thursday and huge floats.
Tips
- It is the busiest week of the year in the area: book your accommodation months in advance.
- In Antequera, park outside the centre and walk up; the old town is closed to traffic during the processions.
- Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are public holidays in Andalusia and many shops close.
- In spring El Torcal is at its best: make the most of the morning for a hike and the afternoon for the processions.
